The Gluten Free Dilemma

Posted by Allison Tilt on Tuesday, May 28, 2013,
I just got back from a holiday weekend in Vermont, and have spent time recently in Seattle, WA and Boulder, CO.  All of these places, including a small town in VERMONT had more obvious gluten-free options than in DC.  So what gives? How can a small resort town in Vermont be better? Ok, maybe better wasn't the best term to use, maybe easier is the correct term.
But regardless, I found gluten free bread and GF pancakes (though not very good ones) at a small breakfast place in Manchester,VT. ...

It's been a while so bear with me...

Posted by Allison Tilt on Friday, February 8, 2013,
This is gonna be a long one!

Snack update:
Remember those Quaker Chewy bars that always hit the spot when you were a kid? Well they've made a gluten-free one! Unfortunately, not Quaker :( Vans, the guys that bring you Eggo-style waffles that can brighten your morning also make a snack bar worthy for your tummy.  I give it 5 stars.

Beer:
Beer is just part of American culture, especially when you're in college.  I'm a HUGE fan of cider, but I know plenty of people with new gluten issues that just c...

The search for a decent snack continues...

Posted by Allison Tilt on Monday, February 27, 2012,
Any g-free foodie with a sweet tooth (aka me) struggles to find a decent snack that's sweet but not a candy bar, and something a little more fun than a cheese stick and a handful of almonds.
And I think I might have found them! My class schedule means that lunch sometimes consists of a granola bar, but that gets boring.  I began to get a little more creative: with great results! First, I made these delicious zucchini chocolate chip muffins from Elana's Pantry.  She doesn't use cupcake liners...

And I'm Back!

Posted by Allison Tilt on Wednesday, January 25, 2012,
After a long hiatus from the gluten-free blogging world, I've made a couple of new discoveries that I think are important for the g-free world:

1. DC is in SERIOUS need of some better gluten-free restaurants! But let's be real- the nation's capital should step on it.  When I was living in Colorado, EVERYTHING had a gluten-free option. I'm in the process of compiling a list that includes restaurants with either a gluten-free menu or at least some options. But I HAVE to give a shout-out to the s...

Maltodextrin

Posted by Allison Tilt on Monday, July 26, 2010,
Out of all my years of research, no ingredient has held quite the mystery of maltodextrin.  My GI, GP and homeopathic doctors, as well as organizations such as the Celiac Society and publications like The Gluten Free Bible all say it is gluten free.  But in my search for gluten free cosmetics i'm finding more and more sources that suggest it isn't, because there is a low possibility it is derived from barley.  I don't know honestly, but I'm going to trust my doctors--so for all of you who are...

The Never Ending Saga

Posted by Allison Tilt on Monday, July 19, 2010,
Ok.  So I decided to really make this site (for those of you who actually utilize it) user friendly.  I'm doing this by going through ingredient lists on popular products and checking them for gluten.  That means, in some cases, typing in every long, scientific ingredient into google and checking its derivatives.  Ugh.  But, so far I'm learning that all Pantene products are gluten-free, but we'll see if that continues as I continue to tackle their ever-growing list of products.  I've really o...

Update!

Posted by Allison Tilt on Wednesday, July 7, 2010,
Well it has definitely been a while since I've updated the site!  I apologize to anyone who has been looking for great g-free products.  Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be focusing on getting some good facial products, as well as popular make-up brands, on the site.  Please stay tuned!

Why do companies never know what's in their products?

Posted by Allison Tilt on Tuesday, April 20, 2010,
I have two issues with the companies I've been researching during this project.

First, most companies today have lists of their vegan or nut-free products, why not wheat?  Honestly, they should know EXACTLY what's going into their products.  It's a challenge to look at cosmetic labels when more than half of all of them are crazy scientific names I barely understand.  If I'm lucky the derived product will be in parenthesis.  Unfortunately, that's "if I'm lucky".  When I get the chance, I want...

Gluten Free Eating

Posted by Allison Tilt on Thursday, April 1, 2010,
My posts seem to relate to food more often than cosmetics, maybe because I've already figured out which products work for me.  Yet while searching gluten free pizza parlors around my area, I was struck by how little representation we Celiacs have.  According to UrbanSpoon, gluten-free friendly entails available salads, not alternative dishes you would expect when dining at an upscale pizza joint or sit-down bistro.  Alas, few restaurants choose to spend time finding alternatives and mapping o...

Bagels

Posted by Allison Tilt on Monday, March 1, 2010,
Bagels are something that are really hard to fine a g-free replacement for because of their unique texture.  But I think after much trial and error, I've found a pretty great alternative.  Glutino's gluten-free bagels, I like the sesame ones, are super yummy.  Like most gluten-free food, it needs to be frozen, thawed and then toasted, but the process is well worth the result when you get to munch on a warm bagel and cream cheese like the rest of America.  It's been super hard for me in colleg...

Sucess!!

Posted by Allison Tilt on Thursday, February 18, 2010,
Last night at dinner I had g-free pasta coated in olive oil and garlic.  Success? I think so.  I needed to talk to the management company's manager (wow, that's a mouthful), so she understood exactly what I was missing- and voila! pasta the next day!  I still have to struggle to get what I want, you know at home I could just make whatever I wanted with gfree flour, but it seems I'm finally getting what I need.  My classmate would argue I don't need g-free pasta, but I beg to differ.  It taste...

School Food

Posted by Allison Tilt on Friday, January 29, 2010,
The Freshman 15 is a myth to me- instead of gaining weight I've lost it as I struggle to get enough yummy food out of my school's food service.  The school is fairly accommodating, but while my friends get to load their plates with pizza, burgers and pastas, I have to settle for salads and rice combos.  Don't get me wrong, eating well comes much easier with a restricted diet, but sometimes I just NEED the greasy pizza or yummy pasta.  And the school just can't figure it out yet.  It's super h...

My New Trick

Posted by Allison Tilt on Thursday, January 14, 2010,
So, now that I'm officially intolerant of three major food groups/allergens (gluten/wheat, eggs and dairy) food is becoming more of a challenge every day.  Especially eating out.  Now I've found some great restaurants that cater fairly well to all these restrictions, but soy sauce remains a huge issue.  Wheat is the #2 ingredient in most brands.  And I for one LOVE sushi and soy sauce on everything.  So I bring my own!! Wheat-free tamari is available at most supermarkets, and tends to contain...

Who'd Have Thought?

Posted by Allison Tilt on Wednesday, December 30, 2009,
So here I am getting information on many cosmetic products, insuring that people who have Celiac disease don't react, but have completely neglected one major skincare product-deodorant!!  Silly, right?  But obviously an important one, saying that our underarms are extremely sensitive.  I'm working on it so no worries, but be sure to check ALL of your beauty products- including ones you wouldn't really think of.  Chapstick/lipstick is also super important as we tend to lick it off.

Noodles, Noodles, Noodles

Posted by Allison Tilt on Friday, December 11, 2009,
I'm just going to continue the theme of food I've started.  Being a college student, our restaurants include those amazing and slightly-above-fast-food joints that give you great meals for a good price.  Those include pizza, pasta, sandwich and ethnic food places- so obviously not gluten free, right? WRONG!! Turns out great places like Panera Bread, Noodles and Company, Tokyo Joe's and even IHOP have g-free options.  I was at Noodles last night (who'd have thought judged by the title of this ...

French Fries!

Posted by Allison Tilt on Monday, November 30, 2009,
Who knew?? I was at this great Irish Pub for dinner this weekend, and had french fries.  Harmless right? NO! Although they did not appear to be breaded, I was definitely not feeling my best a couple hours after the meal.  My advice? ASK.  No matter how annoying it gets to check that everything is gluten-free, just one slip can leave you in bed for a day or two.  Remember that some experts also suggest staying away from food that's been contaminated-so in my case, the fries could easily have b...

My Fav GF Bread

Posted by Allison Tilt on Sunday, November 22, 2009,
I've tried for years to get a decent GF bread.  It's usually crumbly or tasteless.  But I finally found bread that nearly mimics normal wheat bread.  Udi's, a bakery based out of Denver, has created a GF line that rivals any other.  It's still pretty small, and maybe not outside of the state of Colorado, but it's delicious.  They have both whole-wheat and white bread loafs, as well as yummy muffins.  I've found them at King Soopers grocery stores as well as local farmer's markets.  King Soope...

The battle with cosmetics companies

Posted by Allison Tilt on Sunday, November 1, 2009,
Ok, so in the process of creating this website, I've been dealing with a LOT of companies.  Most of them have been pretty helpful, responding with full lists of ingredients or at least directing me to the right source.  Yet at the same time there are companies that haven't been overly helpful.  Instead of providing product lists, they tell me their company physician (not Celiac expert) does not think any wheat in a beauty product can cause a problem.  Ugh.  We all know thats not the case- tha...
